You’ve got it backward there, Pumpkin. You’re laying awake nights pointing your massive intellect in the direction of our coming apocalypse. Save the oxygen (we’ll need it).

If you’ve come this far without breaking any bones or enduring major surgery or coming through to the other side of serious chemotherapy, well, first congratulations. Enjoy this run of excellent luck. Now then, those of us who have survived these things and worse are here to school you. Comfy? Need a snack? A drink? Maybe a drink. Make it a double. Ready?

Bad shit is coming.

Maybe you think we’ve already taken all the hits we can. Newsflash: this has just been for openers, Pumpkin. You read the papers and listen to the podcasts. You know all this. That’s why you’re getting so little sleep.

What makes me such an expert? Easy. For years I was wide awake at 3 am, rigid with fear that I’d get really sick and have to be hospitalized when I had no health care insurance. I was terrified about losing my job and my apartment. In the worst scenarios, I was sure that my health would be permanently compromised. I tossed and turned, terrified that my world would implode if I got sick.
