There is a great and hysterical clutching of pearls going on around the pages of the New York Times and her ilk. Oh, didn’t you hear? Russia has ILLEGALLY annexed four regions in Ukraine!

Because we in The Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave have next to no access to unbiased reporting, it’s hard to say exactly what’s going on over there. Every story in the Old Gray Lady — hell, every sentence in every story — is spinning the same narrative: Evil crazy Putin is trying to take over the WORLD. Didn’t you hear? He’s so nuts he blew up his own gas pipeline!

Could be true. Might not be. No way to tell.

But the United States of America has got a lot of nerve to be shrieking the word “Illegal” at the actions of any other country in the world.

It was abundantly clear to anyone with eyes that were plugged into a functioning brain that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We all knew that none of the pilots who flew into the Trades on September 11, 2001, were Iraqis. We The People marched and wrote and screamed that the planned invasion of the sovereign nation of Iraq was illegal, unnecessary, and would result in exactly the misery and chaos we find ourselves in today. The Will of The People was ignored (shocking, I know).

The United States of America learned exactly one lesson from World War II: War is great for its economy.

Of course, back then in the 1950s, the Dogs of War were ready to slather the goods around. Mister and Missus (White) America were able to own their homes, buy reliable cars, send their kids to college, and then retire comfortably to Saratoga…where they may or may not have taken out flood insurance.

The entire business model of this country seems to be simply keeping that honking huge military apparatus on the move. Oh, and to make sure there are always new toys on the market to keep people consuming.

Along the way, greed got the upper hand — as it always will — and Mister and Missus America are now on their own. Allow me to trot out the dismal stats in case you’re sitting pretty as a digital nomad in Lisbon (well done, you!). Annual inflation in the USA is down to 8.3%. Kinda…
