None of the advice from the Bestselling Author and her Agent was new to me or probably any of us at a recent small gathering in one of the city’s exclusive university clubs. No typos in the query letters, spell the agent’s name right, read the agent’s profile in Publishers’ Marketplace, have the work polished, perfect, and preferably read and edited by a professional.

There were further pro tips that weren’t exactly news to anyone who has had her nose pressed against the windows of traditional publishing’s intimidating mansions. That would be my nose, yes.

A book proposal and chapter outline is sufficient to send with a query letter for a non-fiction book but it’s better to send the first ten to twenty pages along when querying an agent for your novel. Platforms are important so get your social media posts out there. And — this one probably shouldn’t have been surprising to someone living in a building owned by a private equity corporation — publishing is more profitable than ever.

Why? Capital “C” Capitalism is why.

Private equity funds slurped up all the big publishing houses and now decisions on what to publish are being made by uber-bean counters.
