Do We Have to Know Everything?

Sometimes a little mystery is a good thing

I can’t find the news story so you’ll have to take my word for it. During the 2002 construction of the new northern headhouse (their word, not mine) for the 1,2,3, and now defunct 9 subway lines, one of the massive glass mosaic roof panels was stolen. Nifty sidebar: The new subway station sits across the intersection from the original headhouse which was opened in 1904.

This all crossed my mind as we rode the M104 bus down Broadway on our way to ogle this year’s Bergdorf Goodman windows (stunning, btw).

First: do I remember the story correctly? It’s been twenty years after all. Second: If I do, then what happened to that huge intricately wrought curved glass panel? Was it actually stolen? By who? Someone on the project? Hey, maybe some teamster wanted it for the house he was renovating out in New Dorp. And third: I am unable to find out even the weight of each of those panels. There’s certainly no mention of one being stolen.

Here’s the bit that surprised me. I’m actually kind of glad the Google doesn’t know the answer to this one (duh, of course, I asked).
